East Grand Forks Girls face devastating loss at State Championship game

St. Paul, MN (WDAY TV) - The East Grand Forks girl's hockey team already made history making the state tournament for the first time, but today they could end a magical run with a state championship.

The Greenwave taking on defending state champion Blake at the Xcel Energy Center.

East Grand Forks grabs the early lead, just a few minutes in, Lexi Mack behind the net, sets up her sister Haley for the goal and a 1-0 lead.

Fifth goal of the tournament for Haley.

Later in the first, Haley looking for another, her shot is stopped, but older sister Lexi pops home the rebound.

2-0 East-side, The wave led 2-1 entering the third, but Blake plays spoiler, scoring twice, Slyvie Wallin james it in with 11 minutes left.>

Blake wins a 2nd straight title with a 3-2 win.

It was a heartbreaking way to end what was an incredible season from the East Grand Forks girls hockey team. Despite the loss to Blake today the squad says they are very proud of being the first team in program history to reach the state tournament.

Haley Mack/ EGF Soph. Forward: "We just wanted to come out and give it our best and shoot pucks at the net and get rebounds and hopefully we would have came out with a better outcome but it is what it is and we are gonna hold our heads up high and move on."

Coco Piche/EGF Sr. Forward: "I don't think we could have asked for more and to play in front of our fans and in a championship title game to end our career I don't think we could ask for anything more and we are proud of all these girls and our team and who we have become through this program."

Karly Nelson/EGF Sr. Forward: "It was unreal coming to the state tournament and playing here especially my senior year, couldn't ask for anything better."

Jim Scanlan/EGF Head Coach: "Very, very proud of these young ladies and how they have represented our school and our community. It's memories that will last for a lifetime, I told them they are a championship team and championship teams walk together forever."

The Green Wave land five on the all-tourney team and finish with a 26, 3 and 1 record.
