North Dakota is the only non New England-area state rooting for Patriots in Super Bowl, data shows
FARGO—Data released following the AFC and NFC Championship games reveals only one state outside of the New England area will be rooting for the Patriots in the upcoming Super Bowl: North Dakota.
The data was compiled and mapped by popular online sports gambling site betonline.ag, which used its software to collect over 500,000 geotagged Twitter data. A geotag refers to an electronic tag that assigns a geographical location to a photograph or video, or a posting on social media.
The data concluded that five out of 50 states will be cheering for the Patriots to beat the Eagles in Super Bowl 52 in Minneapolis on Feb. 4. Those states are Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and, of course, North Dakota.
North Dakota had 1,400 tweets in favor of the Patriots, compared to 1,100 in favor of the Eagles, according to the compiled Twitter data.
For the state of Minnesota, whose Vikings were defeated in the NFC Championship game by Philadelphia, data show 2,300 tweets were favored the Eagles, with only 950 for the Patriots.
Whether you're a Twitter user who contributed to this data or not, the news that most North Dakotans won't be cheering for the Eagles in the Super Bowl is shocking.
Prior to the NFC Championship game between the Vikings and the Eagles, North Dakotans grew to love and cheer for the Eagles after the team selected former NDSU quarterback Carson Wentz with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Wentz, who grew up and went to high school in Bismarck, rapidly grew his North Dakota fan base as his success on-and-off the field grew.
But, as the data reveals, it appears North Dakotans were much bigger fans of Wentz than they were of the Eagles team as a whole. This, especially after multiple videos and stories circulated online and on social media showing belligerent Eagles fans throwing beer cans at Vikings fans and the Vikings' team bus, calling them names, using profanity and spitting in their faces.
In total, 438,070 tweets were in favor of the Eagles winning the Super Bowl, with only 126,230 picking the Patriots.
