Ada-Borup/NCW girls advance to state tournament
MORRIS, Minn.—Ada-Borup has been to nine Minnesota state girls basketball tournaments. Now it will be making its first state tournament appearance as Ada-Borup/Norman County West.
The Cougars earned a 10th state appearance with a 64-48 win Friday over Underwood in the Minnesota Class 1A, Section 6 tournament championship at Minnesota-Morris.
Ada-Borup/NCW will take a 27-2 record to next week's Class A state tournament in Minneapolis. The Cougars' only losses have come against to two Class 2A schools—a 77-70 loss at Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and a 76-61 loss at Roseau, a team that won the Class 2A, Section 8 championship Friday night.
Ada-Borup reached the state tournament in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017 with state championships in 2008, 2009 and 2015 and a runner-up finish in 2013.
In all those years, Dave Smart has been the head coach, one who earned his 400th career win Friday night.
Underwood, whose previous state tournament appearances came in 2004 and 2005, see its season come to an with a 20-8 record.
Underwood, who lost to Parkers Prairie twice during the regular season, defeated Parkers Prairie 51-47 in the section semifinals.
