MOORHEAD—Minnesota State Moorhead earned an affirmation victory Friday night at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.

Senior forward Drew Sannes scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to help lift the Dragons to a 75-64 victory against previously unbeaten and No. 11-ranked Augustana in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball before 1,143 fans.

"It's to show mostly ourselves that we are a good basketball team and I think we've questioned that," Dragons head coach Karla Nelson said. "We are a good team."

The Dragons (12-3, 9-2 NSIC) have won six consecutive games, while Augustana (14-1, 10-1) had its 14-game winning streak snapped.

"You have to give Moorhead a lot of credit, they came out very focused and ready to play," Augustana head coach Dave Krauth said. "We weren't the focused, aggressive team."

The 6-foot-3 Sannes shot 53 percent (8 of 15) from the floor and also blocked two shots to go along with her game highs in points and rebounds. Megan Hintz, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, added 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Dragons. Hintz shot 88 percent (7 of 8) from the floor, adding three assists and two blocked shots.

"They played great, the first half especially," Nelson said of Sannes and Hintz. "Those two kids came out like gangbusters."

The Dragons built a 13-point lead through two quarters, shooting 60 percent (18 of 30) from the field over the first 20 minutes. Sannes led the way in the opening half with 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor. Hintz had eight points at halftime.

MSUM helped build its cushion with a string of nine consecutive points that started early in the second quarter. Hintz scored four points during that stretch. Senior guard Cassidy Thorson capped the rally with two free throws that gave the Dragons a 31-19 lead with 6 minutes, 47 seconds to play in the second quarter. Sannes scored off a rebound that gave MSUM a 44-31 lead with 38 seconds into half. The Dragons carried that lead into halftime.

MSUM scored 12 of the game's first 14 points and never trailed.

"I think coming out and being the aggressor and being confident helps a lot," Sannes said. "It's one of those games where it's hard not to be pumped up for. ... I felt like we all felt more confident in our play."

The Dragons led by as many as 20 points after halftime, building a 58-38 lead after Sannes scored an inside basket with 3:59 to play in the third quarter. The Vikings countered with a 14-2 run to start to claw back into the game.

Augustana sliced the Dragons lead to 69-64 after junior guard Lynsey Prosser sank a 3-pointer with 2:22 to play in the fourth quarter. MSUM responded with the game's final six points to ice the outcome. Senior guard Allie Koehn paced the Vikings with 14 points, including 4-for-5 shooting from 3-point range.

"We scrapped hard, trying to get ourselves back into it, but we just didn't play good enough basketball to think we were going to beat a team like this on the road," Krauth said.

The Dragons are one game behind Northern State (14-2, 10-1) in the North Division. Augustana and Northern State are tied for first place in the overall league standings.

"When you look at the big picture, it puts us right back into a chance for a North title, a conference title and it gives us an important win over a ranked basketball team," Nelson said.

The Dragons host Wayne State (14-5, 8-3) at 4 p.m. Saturday at Nemzek Fieldhouse to close out the weekend.

"If you don't win (Saturday), it's still a home weekend," Nelson said. "You need to sweep your home games in the conference."
