Over 200 hockey teams compete in 34th annual Squirt International
METRO—From Alexandria to Arizona, and Williston to Winnipeg, 64 squirt hockey teams are taking over the Metro this weekend.
The famous Squirt International is underway, at virtually every rink in Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo.
This is the first weekend of three.
In all, more than 200 teams will be here in the month of February, which is more than 2,000 players.
It's the 34th year of the Squirt International.
It's been around so long, those who used to play in it, now have children and relatives playing in it.
"There's people that have played in it many years ago, and they're telling their kids about it, they're telling their nephews and nieces about it. So it's fun to hear about people who played in it many years ago," said Sommer Lockhart, Fargo Youth Hockey.
The tournaments officially begin every Thursday night with the Squirt Olympics, and the famed "tournament picture."
Almost every team was on the ice at once, for the opening ceremonies.
The championship game is Sunday at Scheels Arena.
