2014 Fall Football Camp Tour: Shanley Deacons

2 / 2

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - This is the spot where Shanley's season came to a crushing end last season.

Now the Deacons are using that play as motivation to move forward and get back to the Dakota Bowl.

Tre Fort/Deacons Sr. RB-DB: “I watch it almost every day, just like motivation I guess.  It pushed me a whole ton, all this off season that's all I've been thinking about is that one play, like how that could have been the game changer, which it was.”

Nick Kjera/Deacons Sr. OL-DL: “I just remember him fumbling the ball and the St. Mary's guy running down the field with it just every day I remember that.  Came with a different focus, we are not the best team anymore and we got a defending state champ we got to go against right away and just thinking about that the entire off season.”

If the old adage of defense wins championships holds true. Shanley says they feel good about their chances.

Rod Oksendahl/Fourth Year Shanley Head Coach: “We feel that our defense is very well rounded as far as our experience level goes, and I think in every phase of the game whether it's running the ball or defending the pass I think we are going to be okay.”

Fort: “From our line to our safeties, even the linebackers we are a pretty hard hitting team, we will go after the ball if you have it, if you put it up in the air we will go after it.  We are just mentally there.”

The Shanley defense allowed just 12 points per game last year.

The Deacons return 17 starters, most of them going on their third year playing, the biggest question mark is finding a starting quarterback between now and August 29th.
