FARGO—Josh Sipes has been to state tournaments before. He still gets nervous before games but looked poised as his team relied on him early and often.

Sipes recorded a double-double with game highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds as he paced West Region No. 1 seed Bismarck Century to a 68-44 win over East Region No. 4 seed Grand Forks Red River in the North Dakota Class A boys basketball state quarterfinals on Thursday, March 8, at North Dakota State's Scheels Center.

Century has been in the state semifinals five times in the last six years and have been in the state championship two of the previous three years but haven't won a title since 2011. The Patriots, who lost in the state championship last season, looked like they were ready to make good on this trip to the state tournament.

"We've had some bitter losses," Sipes said. "We definitely don't want it to come down to that again. We have a chip on our shoulder."

Kade Amundson, who finished with 12 points, relied on his hook shot as he scored eight of Century's first 13 points.

"It was a good start," Amundson said. "We just came out with an aggressive mindset."

Red River head coach Kirby Krefting said he wanted to speed the pace of the game, but the Patriots ran their half-court sets methodically as they grabbed an early lead.

"When you do work so hard to get open shots and they don't go down, it makes for a tough game," Krefting said. "They set the tone right away."
