Wyndmere-Lidgerwood holds off Enderlin to reach region semifinals

WAHPETON, N.D.—Aaron Bohnenstingl has been sporting his long, thick beard since the high school football season started last fall.

"If you can grow it, why not show it," he said.

And why cut it off. Bohnenstingl helped Wyndmere-Lidgerwood win a state football title. Now, he and his basketball teammates are hoping they can make the same kind of run—which started Tuesday night in Ed Werre Arena with a 59-51 North Dakota Class B Region 1 tournament quarterfinals win over Enderlin.

"Fear the beard," said Luke Foertsch, one of eight seniors playing for Wyndmere-Lidgerwood, which will take a 19-2 record into Thursday's semifinals.

The bearded one show plenty to fear early on, when he scored Wyndmere-Lidgerwood's first seven points. He scored 11 of his 17 points in the first half to help the Warbirds own a 28-23 halftime lead.

Then in the third quarter, Foertsch took over. Mostly driving to the basket, Foertsch scored 10 of his 19 points in the third quarter—sparking a 17-7 run that gave the Warbirds a 45-30 lead.

"That's his game right there," Bohnenstingl said of Foertsch's hard drives to the basket.

"He needs to attack for us," Wyndmere-Lidgerwood head coach Todd Hosford said of Foertsch. "It looks like defenders are in position to stop him but he hits it hard, hangs in the air and usually finishes."

Enderlin, a team with no seniors, didn't quit. Thanks to junior Chance Bye (25 points) and 6-foot-7 eighth-grader Joseph Hurlburt (12 points), Enderlin cut the lead to 45-36.

But that's when Foertsch drove hard along the baseline, hung in the air before dishing a pass to the corner where Ismael Vasquez drained a 3-pointer. That stopped Enderlin's rally and gave Wyndmere-Lidgerwood a 48-36 lead.

"We didn't think we played our best tonight," said Hosford, whose team last lost on Jan. 16 in a 64-51 setback at Fargo Oak Grove, the region's top seed that also advanced to a Thursday semifinal game. "But this time of year, I like having a team with seniors and we have eight of them."
