South's late-game rally falls short in overtime at state soccer tournament
JAMESTOWN, N.D. — In the final 10 minutes of regulation on Thursday, Fargo South erased 70 minutes of playing on its heels with two goals to force overtime.
As exciting as it was for the Bruins, they simply ran out of steam.
Bismarck junior Caden Evanson drilled the game-winner from the left side in the 87th minute as the Demons triumphed 3-2 in the North Dakota state boys soccer quarterfinals at Rotary Field in Jamestown.
"It was awesome soccer playing like that for 10 minutes, but it wore us out," Fargo South coach Amer Vatres said. "You've got to give it to our kids — they left their hearts on the field. They played the best they could."
Evanson's goal came as part of a reenergized Demons squad, which used an aggressive offense to force an opportunity for Evanson. Bismarck meets Fargo Shanley in today's 4:30 p.m. semifinal.
"The boys were doing combos back and forth, the goalie came out and I thought I'd chip it into the upper left corner, and it worked out," Evanson said.
It was a crushing blow for the Bruins, whose final 10 minutes of regulation showed why they entered with the No. 2 seed out of the East Region.
Tate Simpson scored right in front of the net on a feed from Alvin Johnson in the 71st minute, and Francese Manye won a desperate scramble for the ball with a goal less than 4 minutes later. The two goals tied the match.
"When you're two goals down and there's only 10 minutes left, you've got to play all your cards," Vatres said. "It helped that (Bismarck) dropped back. We pushed our numbers up, and it gave us the opportunity to bring the ball into their box a couple of times."
The first 70 minutes were dominated by the Demons, who received a first-half score from Merci Ndaberewe, and a breakaway goal from Dane Allen early in the second half.
"I'll take this win any day," Bismarck coach Andy Foss said. "A win's a win at state, and you move on. It was nice to see our kids get tested and respond to that adversity."
