WDAY - The North Dakota Class B Boys Basketball Championship was a game for the ages. Hillsboro-Central Valley and Four Winds-Minnewaukan were tied at 60 when Burros senior guard Kyle Henningsgard nailed a three as time expired to win the game for H-CV. It's the first basketball title for the co-op, and first for Hillsboro since 1981, and first for Central Valley since 1993.
Another team making history this week was the UND men's basketballl team. The Fighting Hawks made it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. As the 15 seed in the West region, UND met up with second seeded Arizona. The Fighting Hawks put up a valiant effort, pulling within seven points in the second half, but Arizona pulled away down the stretch winning 100-82.
The UND men's hockey team will travel to Fargo and Scheels arena for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Fighting Hawks are the three seed in the West Region and will play Boston University at 2 p.m. on Friday at Scheels Arena. The matchup was announced a day after the Fighting Hawks lost to the University of Minnesota-Duluth 4-3 in the championship game of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff. In the other West Region game, UMD will play Ohio State at 5:30 p.m on Friday.
The Roseau girls basketball team capped off it's undefeated season with a state championship on Saturday. The Rams beat Sauk Centre 75-64 in the championship game.
Three local boys basketball teams will be making the trip to the state tournament this week. Fergus Falls will face Columbia Heights in the 3A quarterfinals. Breckenridge matches up with Crosby-Ironton in the 2A quarterfinals, and Lake Park Audubon will play Goodhue in the A quarterfinals.
