Moorhead police: Naked toddler with knife found along Main Avenue

MOORHEAD – Police here are investigating the case of a naked toddler found over the weekend along a busy road, holding a knife.

About 7:50 a.m. Sunday, June 24, a passer-by alerted authorities that the child was in the 1700 block of Main Avenue, Moorhead police Sgt. Clint Stephenson said.

Police responded and found the toddler with a kitchen knife. They determined the child, along with four or five other children, were being watched by a 13- or 14-year-old sibling at home while their mother was at work, Stephenson said.

Criminal charges may be forthcoming, based on the incident and condition of the home, the sergeant said.

“We have to determine if it’s suitable for children to live there, with how dirty it was,” he said.

Stephenson said police are working with Clay County Social Services, which has placed the children temporarily with other family members nearby.

“Obviously, we want the children to be safe, but there has to be some responsibility,” he said.
