Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - Another law enforcement chase to talk about in Moorhead tonight.

This one--short lived.

A Clay County Deputy making a routine traffic stop soon saw his "gun-carrying suspect" speed off.

When Ransi Thomas was pulled over for a routine traffic stop on old 52, in Moorhead, the Clay County deputy ran his name, Thomas was wanted on warrants.

But when the deputy went back to the car to arrest Thomas on outstanding warrants, Thomas took off first traveling northbound on 52  near the Antique Mall in Moorhead, but then going on the off ramp, the wrong way, on Interstate 94 toward Fargo the wrong way. A Clay County deputy pursued Thomas, but called it off on his own, because of safety concerns.

Bill Berquist/Clay Co. Sheriff: “I am really proud of the deputy who said, no I am done.

The pursuit of Thomas was short lived; he traveled against traffic for a mile on I -94 before going into the ditch before crashing into a fence near Rasmussen College.

Bergquist: “The deputy backed off and quit pursuing because we did not want anything bad to happen, the deputy did go on the interstate to warn people.”

Thomas ran from the deputy, but not before dropping a 45-caliber handgun he was carrying with him in the car. He appeared in court today on felony weapons charges, firearm violations and fleeing law enforcement.

The 21-year-old Thomas remains in the Clay County jail tonight, held on $25,000 cash or bond, with conditions.

Thomas also faces charges in Fargo in connection with drug possession and an alleged assault on a peace officer.
