Barn fire near Walcott endangers the lives of 30,000 turkeys
WALCOTT, N.D. — The lives of about 30,000 turkeys were at risk east of here because of a barn fire that threatened their source of food and water.
The fire was reported about 9:20 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, and fire crews from Walcott, Colfax and Christine responded.
None of the turkeys were housed at the Lelm Turkey Farm building that caught fire, but all of the equipment to sustain them was inside. The turkeys are kept in two separate buildings.
Brett Lambrecht, Richland County's emergency management director, said "the electrical is all back on and, last I checked, they were close to getting the water hooked up, too."
He said the equipment had to be replaced quickly to avoid exposing the turkeys to the elements and cutting off their food source.
Lambrecht said as of about 3:30 p.m. no turkeys had been harmed, and he didn't expect any to die.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
