Man arrested after police chase, dies in custody

ROLLA, ND -- A 52-year-old man died in police custody after he was arrested for fleeing police.

According to a release by the Rolette County Sheriff's Office, police started a vehicle pursuit at 9:02 p.m. on Friday, April 13th in Rolla.

The pursuit started in Belcourt, north to the International Peace Gardens and then finally south to Dunseith.

Police arrested the driver of the car, a 52-year-old man, and took him into custody. A female passenger in the car was released.

The suspect had oustanding warrants for his arrest and was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, driving with a suspended license, possession of methamphetamine paraphernalia and aggravated reckless driving.

He was taken to Rolette County Jail.

A jail staffer was doing a routine cell check at 2:17 am on Sunday, April 14th when they noticed the man clutching his chest.

Jail staff found that he was unresponsive and started CPR. Ambulance services then showed up and continued CPR.

He was taken to Rolla Presentation Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The incident is under investigation and is being handled by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

The name of the deceased is being withheld until next of kin have been notified.
