ND man arrested after stepping in front of a bus, fighting with police officer

GRAND FORKS -- A Grand Forks man has been arrested after he stepped in front of a moving bus and injured an officer in a scuffle, according to police.

Hunter Belgarde, 20, faces pending charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, fleeing and assault on a police officer, according to a news release from the Grand Forks Police Department. His arrest stems from a report of a suspicious man to which officers responded to at 8:57 a.m. Wednesday at a Loaf ‘N Jug. Police identified Belgarde as the suspicious person who, according to the release, was acting strangely in the bathroom for “a significant period of time.”

While police were at the scene, Belgarde stepped in front of a bus on Gateway Drive, the release said. The driver took evasive action to avoid hitting Belgarde, but when police attempted to arrest Belgarde, a physical confrontation ensued, officers said.

One officer went to Altru Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, the release said.

Formal charges had not been filed in Grand Forks District Court as of 1 p.m. Wednesday. Belgarde has a history of criminal cases in North Dakota, including disorderly conduct, simple assault and drug-related charges.
