Hawley accountant accused of stealing over $18,000 from vet clinic
MOORHEAD – A Hawley accountant is accused of stealing money from his client, a veterinary clinic, according to Clay County prosecutors.
Craig Fenske, who runs CF Financial Services, faces charges of theft by misrepresentation, theft with intent to exercise temporary control of another’s property and theft by transferring another’s property without consent.
Each of the charges is a felony with a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Altogether, prosecutors accuse him of withdrawing $18,600 from the bank account of Lee Veterinary Clinic in Hawley from January 2017 to October 2017.
The clinic noticed the missing money and had an outside auditor check its books, which revealed 12 withdrawals from $500 to $3,875, prosecutors said.
The clinic confronted Fenske by email who replied “please don’t press charges on me, I will get this paid in full.” In November, he paid the money back, prosecutors said.
A detective from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office interviewed Fenske Jan. 9, and he acknowledged he had taken the money to pay bills but had paid it back, prosecutors said.
A phone message left for Fenske was not returned Tuesday, Jan. 23. Court records did not list an attorney for him.
