EAST GRAND FORKS—Local firefighters say their radio systems often hit dead spots keeping them from communicating with dispatch and each other.

The East Grand Forks Fire Department says the radios it previously used often stopped working right outside of town.

The problem was so bad fire crews completely replaced their radios.

The system has been installed for a year, but even with the upgrade, dead spots are still a problem.

"Even with the new system you know there are tunnels and basements that you go into that just lose radio communication," said Gary Larson, East Grand Forks Fire Chief.

Fire crews say the new system allows them to switch to another channel allowing them to communicate in those areas.
