FARGO – A Fargo couple found the first coin in the Northern Plains Coin Hunt early Thursday, July 13, at the Sanctuary Events Center downtown, a place that they had already been thinking a lot about.

It’s where Josh Philyaw and Ryan Moldenhauer, both of Fargo, will be married in September.

Upon seeing the first clue in Thursday’s Forum, Moldenhauer said he knew “exactly where to go” from the clue’s suggestion that it was a place that, in its old age, has “decided to focus less on religion.”

The Sanctuary was previously St. Mark’s Lutheran Church before it became an events center a year ago. “We toured it when it was being renovated, and we learned the history of it,” Moldenhauer said.

The couple have been taking part in the Northern Plains Coin Hunt for three years. They set their alarm for 4 a.m., bought a copy of The Forum and saw the clue, then headed straight for the Sanctuary at 670 Fourth Ave. N.

By 4:45 a.m., they had found the coin. Moldenhauer said other hunters were hot on their heels.

And their plans for the $500? Wedding expenses, of course.
