Great Big Wheel to Make State Fair Debut

It's called The Great Big Wheel.

And as one of the tallest traveling Ferris wheels in North America, the attraction would seem to live up to that billing.

Visitors to the Minnesota State Fair will be able to find out for sure when The Great Big Wheel arrives this August, carrying riders to a height of 156 feet above the fairgrounds.

"We've been working for years to land a spectacular ride like The Great Big Wheel," state fair general manager Jerry Hammer said in a release Friday. "It will be placed at the center of Machinery Hill on the north side of the fairgrounds, giving everyone a whole new perspective on the fair."

Specifically, the ride will be located on the southwest corner of Randall Avenue and Cooper Street, across from the Family Fair at Baldwin Park. It will operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. throughout the fair, which runs from Aug. 24 to Sept. 4 this year.

The Great Big Wheel was manufactured in the Netherlands and has 36 enclosed gondolas which each hold six people. It also features more than a half-million LED lights that can be programmed to display designs and colors.
