Dave Hawkinson remembered as "the kind of man you want in your life"
Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Members of Fargo-Moorhead's running and biking community call Dave Hawkinson "the kind of man you want in your life."
And, are shaken to start the long road without him.
Hawkinson died doing something he loved - biking.
A driver killed Hawkinson while he was out riding Saturday near Grandin.
Dave Hawkinson wasn't just a well-known cyclist, but a runner, swimmer, and talented triathlete.
Hundreds of friends filled Island Park last night to pay tribute to him.
And today I reached out to family, then spoke with Hawkinson's fellow athletes- some who raced and trained right beside him.
Mark Hagen/ FM Triathlon Club: "When someone gets hurt, we'll come running to help out."
Fargo's close-knit running and cycling community is coming together to cope after losing one of their best.
Tom Smith/Great Northern Bicycle Co. Manager: "Dave was a big tall guy; he always had a smile on his face. He was just very good natured."
Hagen: "He did a lot of races. He was such an outgoing and friendly guy. You couldn't find a nicer guy."
Dave Hawkinson, an athlete, husband, and father, a man they say led the pack, not just on the road, but in life.
Hagen: "Always encouraging, every time he passed me in a race, which he'd always do eventually."
Hawkinson was biking north of Grandin Saturday here on County Road 81 when he was hit by a driver coming from behind him.
Smith: "It was a shock it's hard news to hear.”
Hagen: "This is a tragedy on both sides. This poor young guy who hit him, he's going to suffer with this for the rest of his life."
Now signs of the crash cover the pavement and ditch while Hawkinson's friends and family try to pick up the pieces of life, that are now shattered.
Smith: "He and his wife Amy, they met each other through active living. They were very active people, always running or cycling or swimming, always doing something."
Hawkinson ran Fargo, Minneapolis, even Boston.
And the two were training to complete their first Ironman together in August.
Hagen: "He's the type of quality person you want in your life."
Now Hawkinson's training partners say if there's one thing this close community can do.
Next time you swim, run, or hit the open road on your bike, do it for Dave.
Smith: "We don't know how we're going to go. Dave went doing something that he loved."
Hagen: "It's going to be a tough road."
Mark Hagen told me he's also doing the Ironman coming up in August, and he'll definitely be racing for Dave Hawkinson.
