Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Less than three weeks after the explosive train derailment and collision in Casselton, lawmakers are hard at work trying to figure out how to make rail transportation safer.
The North Dakota delegation, governor, local mayors, and law enforcement met with BNSF officials to talk about how to prevent derailments.
Casselton, ND (WDAY TV) - Just four days after the train derailment, crash and fire, Governor Jack Dalrymple headed to BNSF headquarters in Texas Friday to talk rail safety, Dalrymple met with BNSF's CEO.
Casselton, ND (WDAY TV) - When it comes to adding up costs from the crash there's a long road ahead.
City leaders could not even begin to estimate how much the accident has cost the city of Casselton.
In addition to clean up both on the railroad and surrounding farmland, they say businesses were shut down and people were out of work.
Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - When most of us think of crude oil, we picture something black, with the consistency of syrup.
But a national "watch-dog" group says the oil that exploded near Casselton, is Bakken Crude and more explosive than gasoline.
Casselton, ND (WDAY TV) - If you've lost money from Casselton's train accident, be it hotel, food, even work, BNSF's claim center is now open.
Thursday is the first day people could line up to try to get back some of the money they had to spend.
Most of the crowd was filing smaller personal claims, and brought receipts to prove their spending.
Casselton, ND (WDAY TV) - While clean up in Casselton is right on track, city officials say it will take some time to add up the costs of the crash.
When it comes to, "how much the city of Casselton lost from the accident," and will have to pay to bring the town back to normal”, city leaders could not even begin to estimate.
Casselton, ND (WDAY TV) - For people living in Casselton, Thursday marks the first day of a long claims process.
BNSF opened a crash claims center Thursday morning at the Days Inn, where residents lined up to get back a piece of the cash the crash cost them.
Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - I'm here at Discovery Middle School, where the Red Cross has setup a shelter for the residence of Casselton. Officials are urging everyone in Casselton to leave. Get out; go to a family member’s house. Leave. Get somewhere safe.
Casselton, ND (WDAY TV) - The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is strongly recommending an evacuation of the City of Casselton and anyone residing five miles to the south and east of Casselton, effective immediately.
Casselton, ND (WDAY TV) - Social media went crazy seconds after the fire and explosions.
One thing is for sure.
News of the derailment and explosions and fire that followed hit social media and spread quickly.
