According to the documentary “Minnesota Hotdish: A Love Story,” the term was first written down in the 1930s in a Mankato, Minn., church cookbook, and according to the Dictionary of American Regional English, the term is still only regularly used in the Upper Midwestern states of North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin.
