This undated picture provided by the Weisskopf Museum shows a portrait of aviation pioneer Gustave Whitehead. Connecticut's leading role in aviation has never been disputed, but in June 2013, Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed a bill insisting that the Connecticut aviator flew two years before the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk, N.C. The Wright brothers have long been credited as the first to achieve powered flight. On Thursday, Oct. 24, 1013 lawmakers from both Ohio, where the Wright brothers were from, and North Carolina, where they first flew on the Outer Banks, held news conferences contesting the Connecticut claim.
