Dispatchers Honored

In this April 17, 2013 photo, Robert Nute, left, is congratulated by Newtown Police Chief Michael Kehoe after winning an emergency telecommunications award, at the Newtown Municipal Center in Newtown, Conn. Nute, of the Newtown Emergency Communications Center, handled dispatch calls during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on Dec. 14, 2012. The dispatchers at the Newtown center have won praise from officials and colleagues around the country for their role in the response to the shooting. The call center director said the staff has been lifted by the outpouring of support as the dispatchers recover emotionally, along with the community that still peppers them with calls over anything out of the ordinary.
