Brewer, who served as the first Native American on the SDHSAA Board of Directors, beat out incumbent John Yellow Bird Steele by 193 votes to win the presidency of the tribe which is headquartered on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. Brewer, who will serve a two-year term, said some of the most pressing issues facing the tribe are housing shortages, unemployment, violence and alcoholism.
