Residents in the city of Emerado, ND, have voted to recall their mayor, Brent Aspinwall.
City auditor Steve Burke says Mayor Aspinwall lost that position to challenger Dan Henneman by four votes. Aspinwall had 73 votes to Henneman's 77.
Burke said three ballots that were marked incorrectly were thrown out.
A canvassing board will meet Friday, but Burke said it's basically a formality and the votes will stand.
City council member Robert Griggs was re-elected by a narrow margin, with 75 votes to challenger Steve Tyler's 74. Burke said Griggs is expected to have one more vote in his favor.
Turnout was high in the election, with 153 votes cast from the town's 414 residents. Burke said that's the largest turnout in recent memory.
A group of people in Emerado petitioned for the recall election after police chief Tim Gillespie resigned in March. Gillespie said he was leaving because he didn't feel he had the respect and support of the mayor and city council.
Henneman had been mayor previously, but was beaten by Aspinwall in last year's election with 60 votes to Henneman's 58.
