A Beltrami County Sheriff's deputy is recuperating after being bitten twice by a dog as he responded to a complaint of an unwanted person at a rural county home.

The Sheriff's Office says Deputy Dan Rockensock was responding to the home on Saturday, July 9 when he and other deputies were met by an intoxicated person who was attempting to control the dog, a large Shepherd mix, that was loose in the yard.

As Rockensock exited his squad car, the dog approached him and suddenly lunged at him, biting a chunk of flesh from Rockensock's hand. The dog then again bit Rockensock in the leg.

The Sheriff's Office says Rockensock drove himself to the North Country Hospital emergency room, where he underwent surgery to repair the damage inflicted during the dog attack.

He's since been released and is off on medical leave recuperating from his injuries.

The dog has been impounded and investigation of the incident continues. A Sheriff's Office representative says the dog's owner has not been charged.
