The fire that started shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday won't affect several upcoming events at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, events and media relations director Chris Semrau said Tuesday.

The fire, believed to have started on or near a speaker above the ice sheet, cause up to an estimated $1.5 million in damage to the sound system and building. Smoke damage also occurred throughout the building.

Semrau says inspectors are on scene to try to determine the cause of the blaze, which was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

The fire was located in the catwalk area of the building, making putting it out a tricky task.

"We had to go up stairwell and go through the press box to get to the catwalk,” GF Fire Department Captain Bruce Weymier told the Grand Forks Herald. “We had to stretch a lot of hose.””

About 600 feet of hose was used to reach the fire and 150 gallons of water was used to extinguish it.

The next major event scheduled at the REA is "The Wiggles Big Birthday" and is set for August 3.

Also, the next session of the UND Hockey Camp will go on as scheduled. Cary Eades of the UND men's hockey coaching staff says he's been told the youth hockey camp will resume as scheduled on Sunday, July 10 with registration for the following week.

Luckily, there was no session this week because of the Fourth of July.

Arena officials say the Sioux Shop is closed until further notice. This week's arena tours are canceled. The box office remains open during its summer hours, which are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
