Pierre, SD (WDAY TV) -- The South Dakota House has passed a bill to keep a registry of mentally ill individuals to keep them from buying guns.

Lawmakers approved the bill in a 53-17 vote.

The bill would allow people who are committed as mentally ill and deemed a threat to themselves or others to be added to the National Background Check System.

The bill includes due process, and people can regain their firearm rights once they're no longer considered a threat.

The National Rifle Association testified in support of the measure.
