Detroit Lakes, MN (WDAY TV) - The city of Detroit Lakes sent out an alert to all residents today: Let your water run.

The problem? The frost is so deep that homeowners are having issues with their water service freezing. More than 50 people in recent days have called city hall in Detroit Lakes reporting their water lines are frozen.

From Wadena to Detroit Lakes, water crews are finding that frost is running deeper than it has in years.

Vernell Roberts - Public Utilities, Detroit Lakes: “MNDOT had a report by Ottertail. They measured 95 inches in the roadway - 8 feet - and we saw 6 feet here last week.”

Homeowners in Detroit Lakes are being told to run a small stream of water from one faucet. Customers will be billed for their average water use.

The bad news? As it warms up, the frost actually goes deeper.
