Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Staff and students at Fargo South are trying to wrap their head around a scary situation this morning. During a phy-ed class, a boy was found unresponsive in the deep end of the pool.
The student's condition is being called "very serious" by the superintendent Jeff Schatz.
Sam Schlect - Fargo South student: "Well, when I first heard about it I was in shock."
Sophomore Sam Schlect found out about the pool incident over the intercom, during seventh period.
Sam Schlect: "I don't really know how that happened with teachers on guard."
Schlect remembers taking Fitness for Life. It's a physical education class involving a unit of swimming.
Sam Schlect: "You do laps and what not. Usually if you don't swim, like if you don't know how to, usually you kind of put them to the shallow end where they can touch."
That was the class a young man was participating in this morning when his body was found at the deep end.
Dr. Jeff Schatz - Fargo Public Schools Superintendent: "He was struggling and was on the deeper end of the pool."
A fellow classmate told us off camera that the student was found at the bottom of the pool. Superintendent Schatz says a teacher immediately begin CPR.
Sam Schlect: "Hopefully the student gets better and he can come back to school pretty soon."
Dr. Jeff Schatz: "As with any incident that occurs in our schools, it always has an impact on our student body. Our counselors are experts at working with our students."
...not only students, but also the two teachers involved in the scary situation.
We're hoping police will reveal more information into their investigation tomorrow as well as an update on the young man's condition.
