Fargo, N.D. (WDAY TV) -The attorney for a man who's accused of murdering his nephew over a $20,000 drug debt asked for more time to prepare for the case today.
Michael Alan Burris was back in an Otter Tail County Courtroom today on charges he killed Scott Burris in May of 2012 before dumping his body in the Otter Tail River near Fergus Falls.
The 65-year-old Burris, with his long white hair and beard, was escorted in to an Otter Tail County Courtroom in foot shackles, and it didn't take long for him to be led right back out.
Burris's court appointed attorney Tracy Mitchell requested more time to look over his case, before offering any plea.
And the judge allowed it.
He asked Burris if he understood that by postponing his plea, he is waiving his right to a speedy trial.
Burris spoke softly with a simple "yes, sir".
Burris and his son Michael Kyle Burris were both arrested in Arizona in August, before being extradited back to Minnesota.
They are being held in separate jails, and the younger Burris does appear on the witness list against his father.
Michelle Eldien, Assistant Otter Tail County attorney: "It’s kind of clear that he provided statements and information relevant to the case against his father Michael senior.”
Michael Alan Burris's next court appearance will be an omnibus hearing on May 27.
He'll be in jail until then.
