Fargo, N.D. (WDAY TV) -One week ago, West Fargo's postseason hopes were on life support, the Packers entered the EDC hockey tournament as the seven seed with just seven wins.
But a funny thing happened in a week, West Fargo got hot and in the process, made state for the first time since 2011.
The Packers began the year 1-6, but have found magic in the bottle, as they played their best hockey in the last seven days, culminating in the team's best region finish in school history.
Bailey Vareberg, West Fargo senior goalie: “It's pretty amazing actually, I didn't expect us to be in there. A seven seed in the championship game, that doesn't happen very often.”
Tim Capouch, West Fargo head coach: “You know, they look at the seven seed and they think, well it’s the seven seed they got eight or nine wins. Out of the losses that we have, five or six of those were by one goal. We just stressed if we can turn it around and win those games, those one goal games that we should have no problem.”
The Packers play Bismarck Century at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday; a reminder we'll bring you live coverage of the state hockey tournament, starting Thursday at noon on 6-3, and an announcement, you can see those games on Channel 73 on Cable One, 596 on Midcontinent.
WDAY has the games on Friday and Saturday.
