Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Vaccum trucks are scrambling to clean up an oil spill near Watford City that's spewing 200 barrels of oil an hour.
The Whiting Petroleum well blew last night.
Lynn Helms with the Department of Mineral Resources says the bottom piece of a 3 part "blow out preventer" broke.
Helms says some oil mist did reach the ice on top of Cherry Creek, but that it shouldn't affect the water.
Lynn Helms/Director of Mineral Resources: “This is a large one and also in terms of health and human risk, it's a big one. We've had inspectors on sight since I think about 40 minutes after it was reported so it's being managed but it's not under control yet and until it is, it's not a safe situation"
Helms also says there were no injuries and everyone was evacuated.
He says Whiting Petroluem will pay all of the bills for this spill.
Right now, he thinks the cold weather may have caused the piece to break.
