Fargo, N.D. (WDAY TV) -The American men's hockey team opened play this morning in Sochi, a squad that went younger and changed up its roster after a trip to the Gold Medal Game in 2010.

They opened this morning against Slovakia, who is led by the Bruins giant; 6'9 Zdeno Chara, the US exploded with six goals in the second period and went on for a 7-1 win.

Paul Statsny scored twice, Ryan Suter and Zach Parise were held without a point, but it's a strong start in a tough group.

David Backes, USA Forward: “It was kind of spotty, I think the first period we were adjusting to the big ice for us and figuring out when we can pressure, when we got the puck how much time we are gonna have. All those sorts of things I think are and adjustment for us coming from the NHL sheet, I think in the second they score the goal, which was an amazing shot almost perfect you can't place it in the net any better than that. That was a little bit of a wake-up call for us. If we continue to misplay the puck or not manage it well this is a team with a lot of firepower that can beat us.”

The US matches up with Russia next on Saturday morning, they beat Slovenia 5-2, while Canada opened with a 3-1 win over Norway.
