Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A North Dakota man stationed in North Carolina is finding the snowy-weather driving skills he learned here are coming in handy.

Sergeant Derrek Zaczkowski called in to the Jay Thomas show from his station at Ft. Bragg Wednesday.

He says the military base is closed amid snowfall crippling the South, stranding many drivers on the roads.

Zaczkowski says he still has his North Dakota license plates on his Jeep and has gotten some calls from friends there for rides.

Sergeant Derrek Zaczkowski-ND native: "It was crazy. We went to get some stuff last night because we planned on doing it anyway. We needed it. Got to the grocery store; it was chaotic. People were all over the place. Even the drive home from work. 'm 20 miles from base, so I got a nice little drive back home. It was chaotic on the roads, and the roads are just wet. They don't even have snow or ice on them."

Zaczkowski says the snow has affected everything from driving to cell phone service.
