Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - It's a tradition that some say goes back sixty years; to have a former Bison player on the coaching staff.

One of Chris Klieman's first goals when he took over at NDSU was to fill that spot

And he turned to West Fargo's Tyler Roehl, the all-American running back, who will coach the tight ends..

Tyler Roehl/NDSU Fullbacks/Tight Ends Coach: “Tight Ends is a position I never played so to be able nto coach that position is a challenge I'm taking it on head first be rewarding nto learn something new about football every day.”

How different for you from where you were two years ago at Moorhead high to take it here?

Roehl: “You learn a lot philosophy wise, teaching wise tradition wise, to put it all together in a new position is very rewarding.”

For yourself to be out there to be so recent from the field you have more connection since you just stopped playing?

Roehl: “I think so, to have coached here and have relationship with the guys, have to get to know the new guys as well that'll be fun.”

What are the conversations you've had with Mr Morlock now that you're back to coach him?

Roehl: “The biggest thing is not to get comfortable tailback position at NDSU is highly coveted and have a high level of competition and he's one of the hardest working kids I've met since Day 1.”

Roehl says he got his first taste of recruiting in his short time back, he'll handle South Dakota and Iowa.
