Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A new convention center in Fargo is affordable, but not without a tax hike.
That figure comes from a feasibility study presented today at the Dome. The study compared the cost and impact of a downtown convention center and one added on to the FargoDome.
The FargoDome addition would cost roughly $56,000,000 to build. One percent tax hikes on hotels, food, liquor sales and car rentals are part of the recommended source of funding.
The company that did the study said it would cost more to operate a downtown center since more staffing would be needed.
Thomas Hazinksi - Managing Director, HVS Consulting: “Now, it's a matter of entering into the decision making process as to whether the city feels the cost of doing this project are justified by the benefits.”
The study found that a convention center at the Dome could bring about $15.5 million to Fargo annually, while a downtown location would bring a $1 million less.
