Fergus Falls, MN (WDAY TV) - A man accused of murdering his nephew is finally making his first court appearance in Otter Tail County. 65-year old Michael Alan Burris fought extradition from Arizona.
He was accused of making death threats from the jail there, and was accused of trying to hire a hit man from Arizona.
Today in Fergus falls, bail for Burris was set at 1-million dollars.
More than a year and a half after allegedly murdering his nephew, Michael Alan Burris is finally back in Otter Tail County facing charges.
The body of Scott Burris was found in the Otter Tail River near Fergus Falls in May of 2012.
Court documents claim that Michael Alan killed him and then enlisted his son, 24-year-old Michael Kyle Burris to help him dispose of the body.
Both were arrested in Arizona last August.
Arizona officials filed conspiracy charges against the elder Burris, complicating his return to Minnesota.
Michelle Eldien/Asst. Otter Tail County Attorney: "It's been a lot of work for law enforcement for a year and a half to two years, a lot of work that we have ahead of us. So, it's nice to just get him here, get it done, and obviously, the family needs closure, and that's huge that they've waited this long."
Michael Alan is charged with felony second-degree murder, and his bail is set at one million dollars.
His son, Michael Kyle was extradited to Minnesota back in October, and remains in Otter Tail County jail facing a charge of hiding evidence.
The elder Burris's next court date is set for February 18th.
