Fargo, N.D. (WDAY TV) -A nearly $1 trillion farm bill is on its way to President Obama for his signature.

The US Senate voted 68 to 32 to pass the bill, which trims food stamps for the poor, expands federal crop insurance and ends direct payments to farmers.

It's more than a year overdue after congressional negotiations bogged down over issues, including the size of cuts to the food stamp program.

Senators Hoeven and Heitkamp of North Dakota and Senators Klobuchar and Franken of Minnesota all voted for the bill.

Sen. Heitkamp (D-ND) -β€œIt provides a very real safety net for our agricultural producers both in terms of crop insurance and commodity title.”

The White House says the president will sign the bill.
