Fargo, N.D. (WDAY TV) -How much do we spend needlessly on our daily habits?

From caffeine to take-out, those few dollars each week can really add up.

More than 50 percent of Americans drink coffee every day.

"I’ll have a double mocha"

And if you are like me, it’s not always the more affordable black coffee, and it’s not always brewed at home.

"That cost 4.89"

Just having one of these specialty cups before work each day can add up in a big way.

Duane Emmel, financial counselor at the Village: "Let’s just say let’s take $5 a day, that’s $25 a week just for a five day work week, $100 a month ."

And it’s not just our morning pick me ups that are putting dents in our pocketbooks.

"Can I do a buffalo chicken sandwich?"

A survey of American workers says two-thirds of the workforce buys lunch at work.

This sandwich and drink cost me nearly 10 bucks. Do this a couple times a week and you are looking at thousands a year.

Say I spend $10 a day, alright. And I'm just going to use a regular work week. So that's $50 a week, $200 a month."

Financial Planner Duane Emmel says decreasing some of these habits can be the difference between paying the bills on time, getting out of debt, or even going on that long overdue vacation

Emmel: "Let’s cut that back to $25 a week or whatever. That means I could be setting aside $500 a year in savings, and in two years I have $1,000."

And all it can take is some planning.

"Maybe brew coffee at home, maybe brown bag lunch, yes there's sacrifices to be made, but when you look at the dollar amounts you might be able to save $200 a month, $2,400 a year, simply by making those changes"

Renting or going to the movies is another expense we can often cut back on, as well as how many groceries we buy.
