Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - You know the old saying...you can't judge a book by its cover?
Once bustling, popular stores - some have sat empty for years, others just months, but now new businesses are taking advantage of their prime locations.
From the outside it still looks like the Big Lots and Old Navy that were once there, but on the inside.
The ceilings have been lowered, the floor has been replaced, there's new paint on the walls, and new lighting.
Basically the space has been gutted.
But not for long.
Rue 21, a shopping store for the young and the young at heart will be opening in February in the old, Old Navy store located at 1500 13th Avenue East.
Right next to Rue 21 will be a new Marshalls and Home Goods. A super store combined.
Both firsts in North Dakota.
Construction started in October and they are set to open in April.
On the opposite side of town, the Loretta Building in Downtown Fargo has seen lots of businesses throughout the years, but nothing has ever been in its basement, until now.
The owners of Montes are opening up a new tavern/grill called the Boiler Room.
Reason behind the name? The only thing in the basement right now is a boiler.
It will be a complete remodeling project.
Once finished there will a dining room with about 40 seats, a separate bar area with high tops and TV's –
serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Owners say comfort food.
Located at 210 Broadway its set to open May 1st.
The Loretta building was built in 1912 so it's taken 102 years for a business to finally go in the basement. And it's one of the first businesses in the building serving food.
