Fargo, N.D. (WDAY TV) -Fargo police are trying to keep the community informed about crime, now targeting our cell phones.

The department is showing off a brand-new smartphone app. aimed at increasing public involvement and cutting down on crime on our city's streets.

If you want to learn more about crime in our community, there's now an app for that.

Created by Fargo Police, a year in the making, and now available for free on the Android and Apple markets.

Keith Ternes, Fargo Police chief: "It's the newest advancement in terms of technology that we plan on using."

The app features 12 different functions like tip submit.

Ternes: “Anybody can submit a tip from their mobile phone.”

Where users can report crimes anonymously.

Ternes: “Those crimes that our citizens can help us prevent.”

Or even keep track of sex offenders and the area's most wanted.

One of the app's best features is this crime activities map. If you click on it and zoom in, it shows you all of the reported crime in your area.

Jessica Schindeldecker, Fargo Police Crime Prevention officer: "What you won't see on here are going to be juvenile crimes and domestic violence, and those violent homicide type of crimes.”

Ternes: "I also think it's important that people understand and recognize where crime is happening here in Fargo and what they can do to help us.”

It also brings a department directory and school resource officer information right to your fingertips.

Using this app to strengthen connectivity between police officers and anyone who decides to download.

Ternes: "I don't think it's any secret that it's only by way of having these strong partnerships with the citizens of Fargo. That's what gives us the best chance at keeping Fargo as crime free and as safe as it is.”

All you have to do is search Fargo Police Department in your app store.

Police say they're still working on a version for Microsoft phone users. That should be out shortly.
