Fargo, N.D. (WDAY TV) -Today, U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp announced that the bipartisan legislation she pushed for passed the Senate.

The Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act will delay flood insurance rates, which sky-rocketed in October.

The rate increases are hurting four million families and businesses across the country.

Some families' flood insurance rates jumped almost 400 percent.

Yesterday, Sen. Heitkamp spoke on the Senate floor about the need to pass this bill.

Sen. Heitkamp: “What better way for us to respond to the call of looking at and improving the condition of the middle class than to say, 'we heard, we listened, we understood the challenges; and today, we acted.'’

The new bill will postpone any increases and force FEMA to conduct a two year affordability study.
