FARGO – A man visited four public schools here Wednesday morning looking for lost-and-found items, and in some cases, he took clothing that he planned to sell, police said.
The man went to three elementary schools and a middle school, and each time, he registered in the main office, saying he needed to look in the lost-and-found, said Lt. Joel Vettel, who declined to name the schools involved.
In all four cases, the man was escorted to the lost-and-found by a school employee, and he did not come into contact with any students. The man took a couple of pieces of clothing from at least two of the schools, Vettel said.
Employees at one school thought the man’s behavior was suspicious, and they alerted school officials. It was staff at the fourth school who called police, Vettel said.
Because the man used his real name when he registered at the schools, police were able to quickly find him. He told police he needed money and was looking for items to sell, Vettel said.
The man was not arrested, but police submitted a report to the city prosecutor, accusing the man of misdemeanor theft, Vettel said.
