Master Sergeant Eric Marts was at the State of the Union as Senator Heidi Heitkamp's guest.
MSG Eric Marts/State of the Union Guest: “To be able to attend such an honorable place where freedom and liberty and justice aren't just ideals, this is where it happens"
Not too many people get to be in the presence of the President of the United States, let alone hear him deliver the State of the Union.
For Master Sergeant Eric Marts, a wounded veteran and activists for veterans issues, the experience didn't end when the president left the House floor.
Senator Heitkamp also arranged visits to the Pentagon, Walter Reed Hospital, and meetings with influential lawmakers.
Those in position to help his cause.
Heidi Heitkmap/Senator of North Dakota: "Senator Levin who is the head of the armed services committee and Senator Saunders who is the chair of the veterans affairs committee"
One of the most memorable and emotional moments for both the Senator and Marts was when another wounded veteran was honored by the president in his speech.
Heitkamp: "that soldier stood in the place of every man and woman who has sacrificed for this country in the military. We weren't just applauding him; we were applauding people like Erik."
Leaving Marts with only one regret from his journey to the nation's capital.
Marts: "just to be able to hug him and let him know that hey i'm right there with ya. I would have really liked the chance to meet him"
Marts will be sharing his experience on his Saturday Morning radio show "Heroes of the Heartland". Tune to 970 WDAY am radio at 10am to catch it.
