New York, NY (ABC News) - Travel chaos is escalating in the nation's South and West. According to FlightAware.com, there are nearly 2,900 flight cancellation in the United States today as of 10:45 a.m. That number has risen from about 2,600 early today.

Forecasts of freezing rain and ice at airports not equipped to handle such circumstances are causing mass cancellations in some places, notable Houston's IAH airport. Half of all flights arriving and departing from the airport are cancelled. In Atlanta, more than 35 percent of flights are cancelled. In Chicago, more than 20 percent.

Flight not cancelled may experience delays. FlightAware reports almost 600 delays so far today.

Delta Air Lines is bearing the brunt of the cancellations, with 710 cancelled so far. Passengers not flying out of affected cities will still want to check with their carrier, especially if your aircraft is coming from an affected city.
