Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - While most of us were holed up inside trying to stay warm, a group of bicyclists were doing just the opposite. Rather than cancelling the annual "B-R-RRRR" Winter Classic bike race in Fargo, they embraced the blustery conditions.

Piles of snow, brutal winds- this is not your ordinary bike race.

Terry Flynn/Cyclist: "I figured there was nothing better to do today. There's no football on, or anything. So, I thought, what a beautiful day to come ride my bicycle!"

Jason Pike/Cyclist: "We are totally different creatures, just getting out here making the best of a really nasty day."

More than 70 bikers showed up for The Great Northern Bicycle Company's "B-R-RRR Winter Classic" bike race along the Red River.

The key to this brutal biking- thicker tires, warmer gear, and a slower pace.

And forget pedaling at times the competitors resorted to walking their bikes through the thick snow.

In the four years this event has been going on, it has been colder than this. One year, it was -30 degrees. But for most of the riders, biking in a ground blizzard is something new.

Pike: "I remember not being prepared as well as I should be in terms of keeping my feet and hands covered and I thought I was going to have a bout with frostbite. But it was just the coolest experience and it kept me coming back for more."

Most people would go out of their way to avoid being outside on a day like this… but these bikers admit, they are not "most people…" and they are well aware how they must look to passers-by.

Flynn: "They will definitely think we're nuts. And we are, I agree with them. But that's part of the fun of it, not everybody is going to come out and do this. That makes it unique and makes it a challenge."

The race took a 10K course around the Red River.
