WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) - Williston Fire Chief Alan Hanson is resigning at the end of the month, and says leaving will be "somewhat of a relief."

Hanson took the reins of the fire department in 2007, before an oil boom that has transformed the city into a bustling regional hub. Hanson tells the Williston Herald that he's had a lot of sleepless nights over the last three years, with increases in fires and ambulance calls.

Hanson says he's proud of his work the past seven years, especially when it comes to upgrading technology and communications.

He says his plans are to find a smaller town to work in as either a fire chief or an emergency medical services director.
