Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - There may soon be a big change for morning and afternoon commuters on Moorhead's south 8th Street.
MN DOT is set to unveil a plan to build a new interchange at I-94 and 8th Street, and it will be a design we have never seen in this area.
With so much development in South Moorhead, the stretch of 8th street near the I-94 ramps sees congestion morning and afternoon.
Help is on the way; but wait until you see what it looks like.
What you are looking at could soon be coming to an intersection near you; introducing the so called "diverging diamond” style exchange.
Seth Yliniemi/MN DOT Project Mgr.: “Green light here, cross over to the left side, and then free flow.”
Never seen in these parts before, while it looks complicated, you actually cross over to the other side of the road, and a little like a bowl of spaghetti.
Yliniemi: “It will seem goofy.”
Research indicates otherwise.
Yliniemi: “On the surface it may seem goofy but it is a very efficient design.”
Thanks to traffic cameras and meter counts, MN DOT is well aware of traffic snarls here on Moorhead's South 8th street, morning and afternoon commuters trying to get on and off the interstate
Tyler Fix/Morning Commuter: “Backed up for 15-20 minutes trying to get on the interstate just takes extra time I have to leave 20 minutes early.”
This is MN DOT's preferred choice there are other options; but the diverging diamond is also the cheapest a smaller foot print, the price tag four million dollars.
Work on the interchange will likely begin the Spring of 2016.
Next Thursday night, you have the chance to hear from MN DOT on the interchange "re-do"; 5:00 P.M. at the Courtyard by Marriott, in Moorhead.
